Wales finest championship links course.

15th in the Golf Digest Rankings. The status of the course is sustained by the many prestigious professional and amateur events held at the club over the years.

In the early part of 1891 a group of Cardiff business men, involved in shipping and coal exporting, and all keen golfing enthusiasts decided to form a golf club at Porthcawl. The following April the members were granted the right to cut holes for a nine hole golf course on Locks Common. The rest of that year was spent clearing the common of a dense, tangled covering of gorse and bracken, and in February 1892 Charles Gibson, the Westward Ho.! professional, was invited to Porthcawl where he stayed and laid out the nine hole course. In 1895 it was decided to move to the present location and extend the course adding nine more holes on land forming part of the Manor of Sker. About three years later the original nine holes on the Common were abandoned and the present eighteen established. King Edward VII bestowed the honour of Royal status on the club in 1909 and in 1932, The Prince of Wales (afterward the Duke of Windsor) visited the club with some of his friends who were members.

One of the many interesting objets d’art in the Clubhouse is the full length picture of the Prince. Royal Porthcawl was described as being one of the twelve finest courses in the world by the late Tom Scott, a leading writer on golf and former editor of Golf Illustrated. Since his day the club has acquired a large practice area and further improvements have been made to the course, developments which keep Royal Porthcawl firmly among the world’s top golf courses.

The status of the course is sustained by the many prestigious professional and amateur events held at the club over the years.

Royal Porthcawl epitomises all that is best about the game, as it once was, even down to a creaking clubhouse that is as unchanging as the magnificent links and unrivalled hospitality.

South Wales Links Golf Break

2 Nights, 3 Rounds

 South Wales Links Golf

Come and play South Wales Links Golf, pick any 3 of these 5 fantastic links golf courses:

Ashburnham, Machynys, Pennard, Pyle & Kenfig and Southerndown.

Our Favourite Hole at:

Ashburnham – Par 3 16th with the railway embankment behind the green, and the tee situated high above. Choosing the right club is always a task here, considering the wind and the elavation difference.

Machynys – 18th – Par 5 over water down back towards the clubhouse, 2 good shots can reward with a birdie but first you have to carry the water and then play a sound 2nd shot.

Pennard – 7th Par 4 – with Pennard Castle on your right and some spectacular views across 3 cliffs bay.

Pyle & Kenfig – 13th Hole – a dog leg par 4 easy some days – but treacherous dunes lie in wait for the poor tee shot making it easy to notch up a double or triple bogey.

Southerndown 5th – Par 3 across the valley and old quarry to a green dug into the bank.

*Include Royal Porthcawl for a Supplement*

Just off the M4 in South Wales, all of the golf courses are within easy reach of the hotels, and make for an easy to plan golf break in South Wales.

Staying 2 nights at the Village Hotel Swansea situated within the new SA1 development just outside Swansea City Centre with it’s vibrant mix of bars and restaurants in Swansea City Centre.

Or alternatively at the 4* Stradey Hotel Llanelli, overlooking the Burry estuary. Contemporary furnishings and a genuine warm welcome, make for a great place to stay for your golf in the Swansea area.

This is a great shoulder season package with the links courses being so playable, no muddy fairways, plugged balls etc. Discounted rates available for November – March.

We recommend starting The Premier Wales Golf Tour by flying into Manchester Airport, on arrival you will be met by Wales Golf Vacations representative and from there start your tour by travelling into North Wales and your hotel for the night the Bodysgallen Hall Hotel & Spa. Golf at Conwy Golf Club is a short distance from your hotel, and you will have the opportunity to explore the ancient walled town of Conwy following your golf.

The Premier Wales Golf Tour is a gastronomic delight, the fine dining at the hotels included on this tour is something not to be missed. Many of the restaurants along your tour have won multiple awards for their food, ranging from Salt Marsh Lamb to local bred Welsh Black Beef. As your tour continues south, you will experience the joys of playing golf on the coast in Wales – the iconic peninsula holes at Nefyn & District are a unique golfing experience seldom seen. Continuing south the next course is set against the imposing backdrop of Harlech Castle – Royal St Davids is a fantastic links experience with some very tough holes especially on the closing holes. Continue south to Aberdovey – the classic links – one unique opportunity on the Premier Wales Golf Tour is the possibility to travel by train from Royal St Davids to Aberdovey – a great experience if you have time in your schedule, you can literally take your golf spikes and clubs on the train – get on in Harlech which is virtually in the car park of Royal St Davids then alight at Aberdovey Golf Club car park, this is a really great little rail journey with spectacular scenery as you travel along between the coast and the cambrian mountain range. Just ask and our tour planners can arrange this for you.

Royal Porthcawl Links Golf Break

2 Nights, 3 Rounds

Royal Porthcawl Links Golf Break

The Royal Porthcawl Links Golf Break is the perfect package for the links golf enthusiast, your opportunity to play 3 of the finest links courses in South Wales: Royal Porthcawl, Southerndown and Pyle & Kenfig with all courses within 20 minutes drive of each other. This is the perfect golf break for your group of golfers that want to have minimum drive times to the courses.

The 3 courses are all quite different links, Royal Porthcawl Links is right on the coast at Rest Bay in Porthcawl where the sea is visible from every hole. Royal Porthcawl has hosted several Senior Opens and in 2021 will host the Ladies British Open. Tight fairways and immaculate approaches are a feature of the course along with a unique design, the course turning on itself all the time requiring all shot types to play the course well.

Southerndown Golf Club perched on the the cliffs of Ogmore by Sea overlooks the town of Porthcawl and the Merthyr Mawr dune complex. A fantastic setting for a quality links golf course. The common land has grazing sheep throughout the course which add to its charm. The wind plays a huge part in this layout with the prevailing south westerly making for some challenging drives – not least on the 18th which leads down to the club house – often straight back into the wind.

Pyle and Kenfig Links by contrast runs along the coast virtually adjoining Royal Porthcawl on its famous back nine layout. The course runs through the dunes of kenfig nature reserve, and features spectacular views across the Bristol Channel from the front nine. Of the three links courses the greens are magnificent and the envy of many local clubs.

For your Royal Porthcawl Links Golf Break choose from two accommodation options of  either the 4* accommodation at The Vale Hotel Golf Resort & Spa or the 4* Dragon Hotel in Swansea. Other Hotels are available on request.
