Pyle and Kenfig Golf Course, affectionately known as ‘P&K’.
With its lofty sand dunes hugging the South Wales coast of Porthcawl is situated in a wonderful stretch of golfing country that is also home to Royal Porthcawl Golf Club. Glorious views and historic associations adorn this undulating course with its natural hazards of hillocks, valleys and towering dunes. Established in 1922 the original course was laid out by that great architect H.S. Colt but World War II enforced many changes.
Play was reduced to nine holes, the Army authorities requisitioning the remainder. The rough track bisecting the course was made into a metalled road and the pleasant run by the sea became so popular after the war that play on the nearby fairways was both distracting and dangerous so it was decided to extend the course seaward. P Mackenzie Ross, who was invited to design the new holes, described the terrain as a ‘golfer’s paradise’ providing ample tests for the most skilful of players. It is situated in a region of marram clad sand dunes, far more diversified than the old course. Part of the back 9 has been designated a European Special Area of Conservation. In more recent years there has been a widening of fairways and general clearance of the tall fern plus the repositioning of bunkers. The course is now a wonderful test for all standards of golfers and from the back tees a true championship test.
Here you have a golfing paradise. If I were to set forth all that I thought of this new ground I might be accused of gross exaggeration. I will be content therefore to state that I have played on and studied nearly all the famous courses and I have seen no finer golfing country.

Our Favourite Hole at:
Ashburnham – Par 3 16th with the railway embankment behind the green, and the tee situated high above. Choosing the right club is always a task here, considering the wind and the elavation difference.
Machynys – 18th – Par 5 over water down back towards the clubhouse, 2 good shots can reward with a birdie but first you have to carry the water and then play a sound 2nd shot.
Pennard – 7th Par 4 – with Pennard Castle on your right and some spectacular views across 3 cliffs bay.
Pyle & Kenfig – 13th Hole – a dog leg par 4 easy some days – but treacherous dunes lie in wait for the poor tee shot making it easy to notch up a double or triple bogey.
Southerndown 5th – Par 3 across the valley and old quarry to a green dug into the bank.

The 3 courses are all quite different links, Royal Porthcawl Links is right on the coast at Rest Bay in Porthcawl where the sea is visible from every hole. Southerndown Golf Club perched on the the cliffs of Ogmore by Sea overlooks the town of Porthcawl and the Merthyr Mawr dune complex. A fantastic setting for a quality links golf course. The common land has grazing sheep throughout the course which add to its charm. The wind plays a huge part in this layout with the prevailing south westerly making for some challenging drives – not least on the 18th which leads down to the club house – often straight back into the wind.
Pyle and Kenfig Links by contrast runs along the coast virtually adjoining Royal Porthcawl on its famous back nine layout. The course runs through the dunes of kenfig nature reserve, and features spectacular views across the Bristol Channel from the front nine. Of the three links courses the greens are magnificent and the envy of many local clubs.
